Using Natural Elements in Garden Decor

Cobbled Walls
Cobbled walls create a casual, easy feel in the garden.

By Jenny Peterson

The concept of using natural elements in garden décor might sound odd. Isn't the entire garden natural? The plants are natural, of course, but think of all the other things we gardeners add to it for décor—seating, walls, and accessories. Depending upon the materials you choose, the style of your garden will take on a very different feel. Contemporary gardens use sleek, industrial materials, and tropical gardens feature bright colors and dramatic accessories. If you're looking for an earthy, natural, organic feel to your outdoor space, read on for inspiration!

Seating

If a garden bench or chair is on your shopping list, consider one made of cut stone or bent branches. Stone or masonry benches and chairs can be a bit pricey, and they'll be hot out in the sun, so it's best to tuck them into a shadier section of your garden. Furniture made from bent or woven branches can be a bit stiff and scratchy, so plan to add soft cushions for comfort.

Accessories

Rugs on a patio, terrace, or balcony add a homey touch to an outdoor space, grounding the area and providing a perfect background for your other pieces. Consider jute rugs, rolled bamboo floor coverings, or polypropylene rugs in muted shades. Candles in neutral colors are also good choices—and when their scents are piney, floral, or herbal, all the better!

Stonework

Garden edgings, seating walls, and retaining walls are common features in many landscapes, but the type of rock you choose will dictate the style. For a more loose and organic feel, forego the cut rock "blocks" and opt for a cobbled look instead. Mix types of rock—flagstone, river rock, fossil rock, even found objects—to create structures that look as thought they've been there forever.

Pathways

Skip the formal brickwork and go for pathways made of gravel, pieced flagstone, or decomposed granite. No stuffy edgings here, either—let your plants grow up to the sides of your path, even creeping in between for a softer, age-old look. It's instant classic and casual.
