'Juliet' Collector Tomatoes
Gotta' Collect 'Em All!

Greetings!

Even though the overnight temperatures could still dip down into the frost zone, we are still bringing out the first planting of our collector tomatoes into location on Friday afternoon. There will be over 100 varieties to choose from!

Again this year we have divided the collection into three categories due to the ever increasing numbers of new varieties. Besides our general selection on A17 north, we will have an Heirloom section, as well as a section of hanging tomato basket varieties, available in 2.5" pots for easy planting. Both of these types are located on the east side of aisle A17 north.

We still find Tumbler our most productive hanging basket variety, but feel free to try some of the others like the wild growing Fantastico or the striped fruitedGold & Red Stripe!

New this year are a few interesting varieties for all of you experimenters:
  • Bush Steak -A beefsteak tomato for containers and small gardens.
  • Buffalosteak - A large and meaty beefsteak with few seeds.
  • Candyland - A new, more compact currant tomato.
  • Chocolate Sprinkles - Can't decide between black or red? Try this larger fruited cherry tomato.
  • Heartbreaker Dora -Compact variety ideal for containers with a surprising heart shaped fruit.
  • Little Napoli- One of the only patio Roma types with better disease resistance.
  • Sweet Zen - A new grape bush tomato with high brix (sugar content measurement).
And for all of you who suffered late blight in your tomatoes during last season's wet Summer, we have two varieties resistant to late blight. These are: the old standby Mountain Merit and a new slicer, Stellar, with intermediate resistance to early blight and high resistance to late blight.

New Guinea Impatiens

This week we have filled the New Guinea Impatiens tables, to the north of the cashier area on tables N1 to N7, including the Sun Patiens and Sun Harmonies which are becoming more popular as gardeners begin to see their potential. These types of Impatiens are able to tolerate a lot more direct sun than the regular New Guineas, in fact in our summer trials, we placed some in a west facing flowerbed and they preformed quite well, as long as they were interplanted with other annuals for a little extra protection.

Note All New Guinea Impatiens are quite cold sensitive, so if you purchase them early, please make sure they are well protected. This would also apply to all Begonia types.
Bloomin' Beautiful Begonias

The Begonia tables, to the south of the cashier area (table S2 to S7), are full with the Non Stop, Illumination and Breezy Tuberous Begonias--the last two being trailing types. New in this section is the fully trailing 'Funky Pink' Begonia.

Also back, is the nice dark leafed, upright Non Stop Mocca series, they are really quite stunning with contracting bright flowers.

If you haven't tried growing 'Dragon Wing' Begonias, be sure to add them to the list this season--they are almost indestructible! Look for our selection of Specialty Begonias on table A-2 South.
